What are the three key questions every Project Manager should ask before getting into the details of the project launch, stakeholder management and, delivering the project?

These questions are vital to the success of the project and the emotional welfare of the Project Manager and their team.

The three questions are:

Question #1: What is my vision for the outcome of the Project?

Why do you need to ask this question?

It is very easy to get sucked into the detail of the project and before you know it you have lost sight of where your destination.

If you don’t know where you’re going, you won’t know when your get there.

Top Tip

Create a compelling vision of the outcome of the project and share it with the entire project team. This will give you and the entire a clear focus and goal to aim for.

Question #2: How do I turn deliverables into achievable goals?

Why you need to ask this question?

Everyone (well almost) has heard of SMART objectives, you know Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Responsible and Timed.

Well what is your strategy for achieving the outcomes of the project, the deliverables and the milestones?

What, you don’t have one!

Top Tip

Treat Project Milestones and deliverables as objective to be achieved and have a plan of how you’re going to achieve them achieve them. This will kick lady luck and chance into touch.

Question #3: What are your personal systems for success?

Why you need to ask this question?

Everyone has their own success systems. These are a set of beliefs, actions and behaviours that we perform when we are performing at our very best.

Look at the top sports players. They have a predefined routine that they perform to ‘guarantee’ they have the best chance of performing at their very best.

Top Tip

Create your own set of success systems that are predefined, rehearsed and repeatable that you can execute time and time again on every project. That way you can repeat successful actions time and time again.

Bonus Question: How can I overcome my own personal success barriers?

Why you need to ask this question?

Every one of us faces personal barriers; these are the barriers that we convince ourselves are real and stop us from hitting our objectives and goals.

Remember, those barriers are rarely physical.

Top Tip

Define those barriers and seek professional help in overcoming them.
